INWETTQU FLIMKIEN: 17,000 square metres of green space now open for the public in the Bengħajsa Family Park

Birzebbugia residents and those living in the surrounding area will enjoy a new green open space of 17,000 metres squared, in the first phase of the project which led to the opening of the Benghajsa Family Park. With this picnic area, we are giving another public space which people can use for recreational purposes surrounded by 4,000 trees.

This project was inaugurated thanks to work conducted by Project Green and it is the third green open space being inaugurated by the Ministry for Environment, Energy and Enterprise this year, in just 2 months. Together with the extension of San Klement Park in Zabbar and the Ta Qali Dog Park, the first phase of the Bengħajsa Family Park led to a picnic area which is equal to two football grounds.

During a visit, the Minister for Environment Miriam Dalli and the CEO of Project Green Steve Ellul explained how the picnic area is equipped with picnic benches made of sustainable material. Along the passageway, new information boards have been installed with information explaining the characteristics of the trees and shrubs existing in the park.

About 4,000 trees have been planted, collaborating with various entities including Infrastructure Malta and Ambjent Malta. Following an initiative with Puttinu Cares, about 1,800 trees and shrubs have been planted, with a tree for every 300 euro

or more donated to Puttinu.

For children, obstacle games have been installed with benches specifically ma

de out of sustainable material.

‘I am pleased that today we are opening this park to the public, it shows that the investment we are directing towards the south of Malta is delivering results. A zone which was previously a dumping site and considered for an extension of a commercial project is being returned to the residents in Birzebbugia to be enjoyed as one of the largest parks in the South of Malta,” said Minister Miriam D

alli. “I encourage the general public to go and enjoy this open space”.

Minister Dalli welcomed this agreement signed by the Malta Girl Guides so that they have an open space to organise their activities in.

Steve Ellul explained how Project Green is adapting the open spaces in the community, to be enjoyed by everyone, including those who use a wheelchair. Thus, the picnic tables have b

een adapted as such so that the people using a wheelchair would also have a place at the table and can fit comfortably.

Steve Ellul emphasised how this agreement signed with the Malta Girl Guides, which principally works with children and youth, will provide them with a space where to organise their activities so that the children will have a safe place where to learn. “These are the results we deliver when we w

ork hand in hand with the community. We listen and then we implement,” emphasised Ellul.

Project Green will be responsible for the maintenance of the park.

This park will open from 6.30 am to 9 pm between April and September, whilst fro

m October till March it will open between 6.30 am to 7 pm.
