Project Green, the new government agency, will be implementing several green projects in different localities in 2023.

The agency is entrusted with the Government’s seven year plan to invest €700 million in the creation, maintenance and invigoration of public gardens and other open spaces in Malta and Gozo, for everyone to enjoy green recreational spaces a short walk from home, wherever they live.

Project Green is working with other government entities and local councils to implement projects in different communities. Some of these 2023 projects include new public gardens, such as the new 1,500-square-metre garden at Ta’ Bettina, in Luqa, and another similar open space in Xewkija, Gozo. In Birzebbuga, the new agency is embarking on the rehabilitation of Independence Gardens.

One of Project Green’s first projects this year is the first phase of the transformation of a 1,100 square metre stretch of disturbed land on the outskirts of the Nwadar Park in Marsascala into a new afforestation zone with picnic areas. The agency will also be continuing the afforestation of the area that will eventually become the Bengħajsa Family Park.

A long-awaited project is the rehabilitation of the Pinetum woodland between Floriana and Pieta. This 60,000-square-metre, tree-covered hill is largely inacessible to the public. Its regeneration will be split in several phases, each targeting a different area. The first stage will include the formation of natural jogging paths, picnic benches, gates and other child safety features.
